THIRD STAGE
APPLICATION

Application of washes.
This should be quick using as few strokes as possible to cover any area being worked on. A minimal amount of brush-strokes equals greater purity and translucency of colour.
Planning the painting:
Mentally paint the picture before proceeding - analyse the source picture above - and be aware of the colour mixes you are about to apply to each area, try visualising the result. Will the brush you are about to use carry enough colour - have you mixed enough colour - is the mix strong or weak? Try it out on your - trial pad!

Shadows on the buildings:
Mix [ML] add a very small amount of #7 . When completely dry add windows and doors using a stiff mix of [RG]. - See large picture for guidance.

The background trees:
Mix [DG] add a small amount of #4
apply quickly with a loaded brush taking care around chimneys etc.
If applied correctly an interesting texture will appear. See large pic.

Dry stone wall and road:
Mix a medium strength wash of [WG] add a small amount of #7 apply to wall and road in an irregular and broken wash add water to create a flooding action to the colour, this leaves dry areas, which when the wash is dry can be sharpened with dark colour to create the effect of detail. See large picture for finished effect
