Standard Notes:
Planning the painting: This is very important!
First read through all the notes - mentally paint the picture before proceeding - analyse the source picture above - and PLEASE be aware of the colour mixes you are about to apply to each area, and the order in which they are applied, try visualising the result. Will the brush you are about to use carry enough colour - have you mixed enough colour - is the mix too strong or too weak? Try it out on your - trial pad!

Application of washes.
This should be quick using as few strokes as possible to cover any area being worked on. A minimal amount of brush-strokes equals greater purity and translucency of colour. Too much dabbing and scrubbing when applying the colour kills its freshness.

Basic Mixing Method.
More water in the wash gives a pale or weak wash, more colour produces a stronger wash. Most mixes require only two colours, one will be darker than the other. Mix sufficient quantity of the lighter colour and just keep adding small quantities of the darker colour until you feel happy with it, keep checking your progress on your trial pad.

1 The Sky notes:
Read through all the sky notes before you start, then there will be no surprises half way through the applications.
First mix the required amount of colours, a medium to pale strength wash of #3Winsor Blue; a pale wash of #6Light Red.
You will need facial tissue to lift out the cloud effect, toilet tissue will do but facial tissue is more robust and doesn't disintegrate.

2 The Sky:
Tilt your board at just a medium angle. This will allow the applications to flow more slowly down.
Using a size 12 brush to first apply clean water, starting at the top left, stroke on so that brush hits the paper leaving hardly any dry areas of paper
. Progress across the paper and down to about half way.

3 The Sky the Bottom Half and the clouds:
Winsor Blue - While the paper is still wet with the clean water and the board is still at the same angle, using the size 12 brush loaded with the Winsor Blue wash allow the colour to drift off the brush onto the wet paper, first at the top left and quickly all the way across, using the curtain of colour technique, keep loading your brush with colour to ensure there is no danger of the colour starting to dry,continue down to half way.
. Now apply your Light Red wash, into the Winsor Blue just above where the Winsor Blue stops at the half way mark. Continue down the page with light red, using the curtain of colour technique, at this stage there is a good deal of colour and water on the paper and it's ready to flood down. Using your Light Red brush still loaded with colour bring it down to the bottom and swish it off the page. Blotting paper on your board underneath the painting is always a good idea to catch the colour as it floods off the page.

To create the clouds, take the tissue fold it and dab out the shape of the clouds, this has to be done before the Winsor Blue wash has started to dry or even lost the glossy wet look.
